Amsterdam information - What must I avoid in Amsterdam?

Taking your car into the city -centre

Parking is very difficult & expensive. Clamping is widespread and those clampers are not only efficient but also enthusiastic about their work. If clamped, you face a heavy fine or risk the danger of your car being towed away, which is even more expensive.

Tram riding without a Strippenkaart (valid pass)
A strip of tickets for the trams is available from most newsagents and is cheaper than getting a ticket from the conductor. Travelling without any ticket at all will cost you a big fine if you get caught. Not to mention the red face!
Beware the cyclists

Walking or standing on the bicycle lanes is a high risk activity. In Amsterdam, the bike is king/queen and it drives the locals mad to have pedestrians strolling onto the bike lanes. They travel fast and furious, so when you hear the tring tring roing from a cyclist's bell, get out of the way - quickly.

Avoid the following areas at night

Any area that are not well lit, or where you feel uncomfortable, is best to be avoided. Trust your instincts, this way you cannot go wrong!

Discussion

Avoid getting into discussions with strangers who walk up to you with a sob story, asking for a hand-out.
Avoid political / religious discussions in public areas, (actually, avoid both political & religious discussions at all times!

Flashing

Yes! Flashing! Avoid waving large wads of money about in public. If you do need to draw money out of a cash dispenser, do be aware of your surroundings & place the money as quickly as possible in your wallet/purse.

Some Social Tips for general use in Amsterdam

The Dutch social events and some business life is rather informal and sports ware is generally quite acceptable. The Dutch are a friendly race of people, only too happy to make contact with strangers, especially polite strangers!

The sale of Alcohol is readily available, even in the supermarkets, the same goes for the sale of cigarettes, however here one should officially be over the age of 16 to purchase, and to smoke in public. Not especially enforced however.

Business Tips
Strictly speaking, serious business is conducted in rather a conservative and formal manner. A good suit obviously makes a better first impression that sandals with socks and jeans.
Appointments are definitely a recommendation and most business meeting held with foreigners would more than likely be held in English.
Business cards are definitely a must.

Drugs
Unfortunately Amsterdam has a very bad reputation with the use of drugs.
This is unfortunate and personally I can do nothing to change this attitude except give my own personal opinion.

Now I know many of you, whatever your age, whatever you say, are going to try the drugs in Amsterdam, whatever I say. Stupid, stupid, stupid, because you will spend your entire trip stoned out of your little head and see nothing of our wonderful city except the coffee shops. By the way, don’t confuse coffee shop with a quick stop to drink coffee, this is what we call the shops selling hash, etc.

Also a little tip for you, hash and marijuana is much much stronger in Amsterdam than anything you might be used to, so take care and if you must do this, take only a few tokes and avoid at all cost, pills, hash-cookies and it goes without saying, hard drugs.

So I am going to link you to the one safe coffee shop in Amsterdam and do your worst. BUT don’t even think of lighting up a joint in Clemens as if I have to warn you twice, I personally will throw you and your baggage outside and you will not get a refund. I hate the odour, the smell is difficult to get out of the drapes so you will also pay the dry cleaning cost and why should the rest of the hotel get stoned along with you? Yup, the smell is so strong we can all partake and that answer is No!
